Buy energy efficient appliances. When selecting new home appliances (refrigerator, washing machine, etc.), consider the ones that have the European label A+ because it is a sign that the appliance is energy efficient.
What can I do?
How to make your home energy efficient?
Always switch off and unplug the appliances when you are not using them
Think about home insulation – heat is stored better in the colder seasons and leads to lower power consumption
Think about adding solar panels to the roof of your home
Don’t heat up your home too much – lowering your home temperature by just 1 °C can lower your electricity bills by up to 7%.
Think about using energy efficient light bulbs
When you air your room, leave the window wide open for a few minutes and then close it instead of letting the heat go for a long time
Defrost your fridge regularly. This can save up to 30% of the energy used
Do not put hot or warm food in the refrigerator. Let it cool first and then put it inside the refrigerator
Do not leave your TV, stereo or computer in standby mode. On average 45% of the energy a TV consumes is from a standby mode
Do not forget to plug off your mobile phone charger when the battery is fully charged
How to reduce our personal carbon footprint?
When possible, walk or ride a bicycle instead of driving a car
Use renewable instead of plastic bags when shopping
Try to reuse and recycle
- Avoid traffic while you are driving because it wastes gas and creates additional CO2 emissions
Eat more locally produced and organic food
Inform yourself and advocate for clean energy sources
Use the water wisely and efficiently
Drive a low carbon vehicle
Try to avoid flying – airplanes emit huge amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere
Build a tree – trees absorb the CO2 from the atmosphere
Try to eat less meat – meat production emits huge amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere
